The History of Blackman & White

1964: Blackman & White (BW) founded by Les White, an engineer with a special interest in machine tools, and electrical engineer Jack Blackman. (We’re still family-owned. Les’s son Alex is our MD).

1979: We designed a two-axis cutting table for our workshop. Launched as our first ever cutter, the AW80 debuted us as a machine tool manufacturer and sold worldwide.

1995: We designed laser cutting systems to complement our Orion, Genesis and MasterCut blade cutters.

1994: Requests from local sail makers led us to design and build the first Orion machine. This floor-mounted unit created the shapes required for sail making quickly and accurately and is the grandfather of today’s Orion range.

2002: We supplied our largest ever MasterCut machine measuring 260 metres long.

2003: We launched the first twin-headed simultaneous cut machine for the filtration industry.

2004: We launched the first ‘kiss cutting’, multiple tool head cutter, for working with vinyl in the graphics industry.

2005: Our stringing machine was created for sail makers requiring laminated strung sails.

2008: The Genesis Conveyor is born to help customers maximise floor space and increase productivity.

2009: Our dual gantry combined blade and knife cutter was developed to enable simultaneous knife and laser cutting.

2010: We launched our first abrading head for combined sanding, grinding and knife cutting on a vacuum conveyorised bed. The deep blade reciprocating knife cutter is also launched for the caravan industry to tackle thick polystyrene.

2012: We launched our sister website Cutting Resources who focus on selling machine spares and consumables, and were shortlisted as finalists in The Manufacturer of the Year Awards for our design and innovation.

2013: The MasterCut Versa-Tech was created to fulfil the needs of the graphics market and features routing and multiple driven knife tool options.

2014: Blackman & White Celebrated 50 years of trading, it was half a century ago that Les White and Jack Blackman opened the doors.

2016: We were proud to be awarded the Innovation 50 kite mark - this was awarded to the county’s 50 fastest growing and most innovative companies in Essex and in November of that year, we were also finalists in the 2016 Amazon Growing Business Awards for export.

2018: The Company celebrated record sales success of its Orion Cutting Machine, surpassing all other years sales in just 7 months.
